Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan 4

After a whole day of sight seeing including visiting the fishing village in Teluk Bahang (the fishermen were just unloading their catch when we got there... geram gua nak fresh seafood) and wifey grand aunt nearby Waterfall Road, it was time to decide where to have dinner. Ideas kept pouring in and my brain just couldn't compute which one is the best.

Tomyam Sheraton ker, Teluk Tempoyak ker, Tari Cafe ker (unfortunately, Tari Cafe is no longer there - i saw traces of building being torn down in that area), Sany Kueh Teow ker, Gurney Drive ker, Seagate ker, Shariff Nasi Kandar ker, Bukit Gedung ker, Celup Celup ker... aiiiyaaaa.... too many places to visit in such a short time...

Finally, we landed to have our dinner here... and maybe later go for supper at Sany Kueh Teow....
I was there before 8pm and look at the queue.... as long as ever.... i waited almost 30 mins just to get a plate of nasi kandar... lamer siot.. almost everyone in the front queue had multiple orders... in the photo, i was standing under the flag behind the lady in red-T... nampak, tak?

35mins later... the queue got longer and longer... and it was drizzling..!!! i dunno what they put in the nasik kandar but it's addictive and betcha it's the best one in town (not caravan, not kayu, not line clear etc etc)

This was my reward for being patient... Nasik kandar ayam kapitan (kuah lebey arrr), telur dadar & sotong.. RM4.50... simple but delicious... i didn't order the telur sotong cos i have never liked it but two or three fellas in front of me never failed to asked for it. i know Nilki loves it too... haha.... i was hoping to order a piece of the kurma kambing but it was sold out already.

On the way to our car, i snapped this photo. The legendary "Petepap" sound was still heard when i passed the stall. Petepap is the sound of the rubber band being snapped forcefully when the stall owner ties-up the nasi bungkus.

I saw Man (is this his real name? Fassex please verify), of Nasi Ayam Barcelona. He's as 'big' as ever and i wanted to take a photo with him tapi malu larrr... haha...

Later, i went round in vain searching for Sany Kueh Teow but i couldn't find it anymore. I went tepi Sunshine Square takde, tepi hi-way takde, tepi KFC Sg Dua takde.. hmmm.... where could it be, huh? or dah tutup kedai kot...? i saw a few poser stalls but they didnt attract me as much.

Hampa dan kecewa.

Later, we checked-in at Vistana Hotel in Bukit Jambul and went straight to bed after a long but interesting day tour.

Stay tuned.

Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan 3

Oh well, due to various unexpected recent events of higher priority, i was unable to complete my Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan blogging series.

Anyway, i'l make sure that i'l blog about it in the next few weeks. Thus, this is another one of the outstanding posts. Enjoy.....

After a satisfying bowl of chendul and ice cool teh bunga, i took my wife ronda-ronda Georgetown. One of the place we had to stop is this beautiful & historic Kapitan Keling Mosque. I was gladly suprised that the mosque has been restored and whoever who did the job deserve a pat on their back. I was in awe to see to quality of the restoration work. Very nice.

Along the way, i saw a few more under going restoration work and i hope this effort continues as much as possible to save our heritage.

Round punyer round, we reached this street. Load of stories are attached to this street and i shall keep most of it in my memory chest and apologies to spouses/partners/others as i'm not at a liberty to reveal the intricacies.... haha....

Still on Chulia Street, we passed the original location of Kassim Mustapha restaurant. The restaurant went through a major makeshift and now it looked a bit modern and presentable to tourist. However, i missed the old dirty facade and scattered tables/chairs by the sidewalk.

Then , we went to Pulau Tikus to find my mom-in-law place where she had grew up in the past. We found the location, took the pictures but we were told later that the house has been torn down. The house in the picture was built later on the same location, along Jones Road. We found her primary school too, Convent Jalan Tikus and my wife had the chance to get a glimpse down the memory lane.

From there, we went to the Botanical Garden but unfortunately, it was drizzling. Darn. I thought of taking my son a trip close to nature and expose him to experience the monkeys in person but takde rezeki.

So, we went to Miami beach and the sun came out again at the right time at the right place. I can still remember we went fishing here but came back with nothing. 5 hours of sheer waste of time and i just couldn't stand sitting there waiting endlessly hoping that the fish will bite the bait. Fishing is definitely not my 'thangggg'.

Anyway, we lepak for awhile, ushar2 couple dating/projek lam laut (haha..) and we had a pack of rojak udang with petis udang. Yumm... yummm.... sedap siottt...

We also saw the tsunami victims temporary shelter and reminded us of the tragic incident which had hit the beach in Dec 2004.

My son, enjoying ice-cream at Miami beach. Look at the new tarmac they constructed at the beach. It nice, clean and safe for people who wish to go there to lepak and not swimming. We wanted to go swimming but the afternoon heat was too intense for any decent beach outing.

Stay tuned.

Adebayor ran amok here!

for the record: aku red devil ok..gunners tak main!

Lamb and Genting Highlands.. photos

Baked Salmon.... high in Omega 3 and protein...
Good for heart and muscle building...

Roast lamb.... nampak cam anak unta, ek?

Yesss.... that's my share... lean meat... good source for protein
(that's me at the back ground : salivating over the lamb leg)

Fadil, OP Shazly, me, OP Kam... getting ready for nite torture...

Fadil and me... at Genting Highlands signboard...
(can see the signboard very faint at the back..)
Steve (in orange), Fadil, OP Shazly (white) and me (struggling wehhhh...)

Look, how bright is the phonecam flash reflection...

Imagine how dark the area was... pitch black..!!

Approaching finishing line... incredible feeling... and smiling face too...!!

Lamb and Genting Highlands...make any sense?

Last Friday, 21/9/2007, I had my first breaking fast buffet of the month at the Islamic Arts Museum with a friend, OP Shazly. The restaurant served Middle Eastern typical cuisines such as kofta (meatball), barklava, lamb in spinach sauce, Lebanese bread, roasted whole lamb, steamed salmon, sauteed prawns, pistachios in creamy dessert, etc etc. What puzzled me was they also served common Malaysian food like kueh tiaw goreng, satay, murtabak, ayam goreng, udang masak lemak, nasi putih etc (kueh tiaw goreng at an arab restaurant?? How good can it be? Purrghleasee….). Anyway, I didn’t touch any of the local dishes as a personal protest especially after paying a bomb for the much touted theme spread.

I didn’t bother to adhere to normal buffet manners i.e skipped the starters/appertisers and went straight to the many main courses. I dug into the various lamb dishes culminating with a roasted lamb ribs and leg on my plate. We had heads turning in amazement to see myself and OP Shalzy massacred the roasted lamb leg. Haha…. Sedap siot… (Goat and lamb meat are some of the most difficult food to be digested and a very good source for protein, thus, for those wanting to burn more calories and build muscles at the same time, maybe you should try not to shun away from these meat no more. Belasah jer… janji exercise cukup).

Anyway, armed with heavy hi-protein meal coupled with a good dosage of carbo-loading, we then joined another group of friends who are doing something that I never thought I would be doing too – brisk walk or jog up to Genting Highlands at 10pm during the fasting month…!!! Call it crazy or madness, it was exactly what we were attempting on that particular nite.

We gathered at Genting Sempah at 10pm and I was pleasantly glad to see my other friends from RMC were there too but he must be more surprised to see me as I was preparing for the workout.

Menu for the nite :
– To complete the Stage 1, a 12.4km uphill/downhill route and re-group at Goh Tong Jaya for a break and refuelling.
– To complete the Stage 2, a 9km steep uphill route from Goh Tong Jaya to the summit.

I was given the assurance by OP Shazly that I will be doing a 1 hour walk only and then decide thereafter whether the body still permits to take the sufferings. At any point of time if my body cannot take it anymore, then we will backtrack and go downhill to Genting Sempah. (yeah rite, thanks a lot for comforting me… ). There were three support cars just in case if there any emergency and one of them was another RMC friend, OP Ala Usat (he came a lil’ bit later due to work commitments but joined the climb after Goh Tong Jaya)

The thought of walking up the snakey and hilly road to Genting had killed off half of my spirit already. I didn’t see any much sense in trying out this workout except for the sake of torturing and tormenting my body. I hardly felt relaxed whenever someone was coaxing and motivating me to stay calm and focus.

Those who were walking up (including me) started their journey at 1030pm. The rest will wait for the latecomers and jog up thereon. There were a few ladies among the crowd but surely I was the ‘biggest’ and ‘heaviest’ nuthead of the nite.

The first 10 minutes was quite steep and tough on my calf. I was breathing heavily and gasping for oxygen. I was in a group of three (OP Shazly and Fadil) and I was pacing myself not to be left behind. The regulars were saying that they don’t normally do this in any other month’s unless the jungle guardians or forest dwellers were tied and locked up like in the month of Ramadhan. In any case, I don’t want to be left behind in such area at that particular time of any day..!! Thus, I tried to keep up with the guys and slowed them down whenever possible.

OP Shazly and Fadil were chit chatting to keep the journey interesting while fast-and-furious wannabes kept blazing the sharp corners every now and then. I guess they were really eager to get their money burnt at the casinos whereas we were burning calories as we climbed. Same route for different purposes.

As slow as the journey can be, 30 minutes of walking had passed without me noticing it. In any cardio-type workout, this is where the calorie burning goes into overdrive if I keep my legs moving. Sure enough, I think my stomach was working extra hard to digest the lamb and fuelling my body with energy as slowly but surely my full stomach is no more full. At 3km mark, we had a short breather and sipped Gatorade to wash off the bitterness taste around my mouth and throat. I stretched my leg a bit to avoid blood pulling and discourage acid lactic build-up. We continued walking and we saw the support car giving us words of encouragement (Betcha, I bloody need it…!). By now, I was sweating like a pig but my legs seemed to be holding up quite well. The longest distance I have done in the past three months was 5-6km on undulating terrain and never a constant uphill climb, thus, every step that I made was a step towards my personal best.

At 6km mark, I was really struggling and my calf muscle started to twitch. I was told that this maybe due to muscle fatigue, blood pulling, water deficient or demineralization. I stretched again and gulped more Gatorade. By then, I had covered about 1:15hr on the road and 50mins of effective walking. Thus, it was time to make a decision whether to proceed to Goh Tong Jaya, take the support car or turn back downhill to Genting Sempah.

As I was contemplating to call it a day, suddenly, I was joined by the last group (Ariff and May Senn), they encouraged and challenged me to carry on at least until Goh Tong Jaya which was about 6.4km to go!! Darn, I had already bested my PB and these fellas are pushing me to go further. In disbelief as I might be, I persevered and continued walking. From this point onwards, there were more downhills than uphills. Every single step that I made thereon was a mental barrier cruncher and my self-belief skyrocketed. At this point, I could see Genting Highlands glittering on the horizon coming nearer and nearer. My body was tired and my legs were weary but this is a classic mind over matter, I started to jog in small steps and matching May Senn’s pace. We jogged all the way until the Goh Tong Jaya junction and walked uphill for the rest of the final kilometer towards the re-grouping checkpoint.

We reached the Stage 1 checkpoint at approximately 12:45am or after 2hrs 15mins covering 12.4km of walking/jogging. We had a break for a while and the rest of the crowd continued to march towards to summit which is another 9km of steep uphill climb. I decided to call it a day and savoured a quiet ecstatic feeling while downing my gut with an iced cool 100plus.

I felt a personal sense of achievement to be able to complete the Stage 1 route. A mix feeling of humble disbelief and relief that even at this age and body size, God has given me the strength to overcome an obstacle and completed something beyond my imagination. I dunno how much calorie I burnt but the whole lamb leg was completely burnt to the ground, that’s for sure.

Note: I will post the photos once I got them from the organizing party.

The joy of being a kid

Hi PW clans,

This is another trip we made mainly to Disneyland Paris. We spent two taxing days at Disneyland Park and also at the Walt Disney Studios. On the next days we were visiting Paris. This trip was planned by my husband since he said it was his dream to set foot on Disneyland. It is also an advanced birthday gift for my daughter, Farah. She was so excited when she saw Disney characters walking pass her. For one year only (from 1st April 2007 to 31st March 2008), Disneyland Resort Paris celebrates its 15th year with the BIGGEST Disney birthday bash EVER! More new additions, more dreams, even more "wow!" than ever!

In front of Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Fahmi and I became more excited than our little one!

Farah and Marry Poppins.

This is really huge...

Notre Dame

Arc de Triomphe

I hope you've enjoyed these pictures. I would say you should not miss Paris and Disneyland as must-go-and-see-places in the world. It should be in your where-to-travel list!...

Oops I forgot to upload this video. It should be interesting for guys out there!:

Bye Bye Jose..!!

MU opened their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win against Sporting Lisbon in Portugal. The scorer is a former prodigy and a product of Sporting Lisbon youth system, a starlet with dashing looks, Cristiano Ronaldo headed a cross from Wes Brown into the goal, 62 minutes into the game.

To the Cheski fans, Jose just dropped a bomb but it would be a shame is he meant what he said. Personally, i like his character and his stinging comments . He's a charismatic man, colourful personality and clever with his thoughts .

Jose, your action came a bit too early. I was expecting it to come this weekend (Man Yoo vs Cheski). You have added the extra colour that the EPL was lacking just by being yourself.. So who is gonna team up with Fergie and throw banter and mind games at that Rafa in Red..? Aahh nevermind, we still have Wenger. Now that you may be gone, i hope Chelski will return to where they belong (no hard feelings aah!) and hope that Fergie has an opening at Man Yoo for you.Adios Amigo...

Some of Jose Mourinho famous Quotes:

"I told Mr Ferguson United didn't deserve to leave with nothing. [After beating them 1-0]Jose Mourinho"

"If I wanted to have an easy job... I would have stayed at Porto - beautiful blue chair, the Uefa Champions League trophy, God, and after God, me."

"Maybe when I turn 60... I'll have the power to speak to people and make them tremble a bit [on Alex Ferguson]"

"There is no pressure at the top. The pressure's being second or third."

"During the afternoon it rained only in this stadium - our kitman saw it. There must be a micro-climate here."

"My family love living in London. It is a fantastic city and a city such as this deserves to host the Olympic Games."

"We are on top at the moment but not because of the club's financial power. We are in contention for a lot of trophies because of my hard work."

"If I made a mistake then I apologise. I am happy that I'm not going to jail because of that."

"If Roman Abramovich helped me out in training we would be bottom of the league and if I had to work in his world of big business, we would be bankrupt!"

We'll miss you seynior Mour..!!

Doa di pinta.....

Just to inform you guys that my beloved mother was admitted to the hospital last Thursday (1st Ramadhan) due to an unexpected rise in blood pressure and sugar level.

She was later diagnosed to have suffered from a mild stroke that causes her body system to go haywire.

She has been discharged from the hospital as of yesterday and now recuperating at home, Kajang.

She's still weak and not in the condition which i had wished for. The whole family members are going through hard time now and your kind support is very much appreciated. To those who had seen and knew my mother like Aiie, Araya & Nilki etc, you'll feel sad to see her condition now.

Anyway, if you dont mind, i pledge your kind prayers from far and wide hoping that she will recover soon and that HE will grant my mother a life with good health. Insyaallah..

Thank you.

Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan 2

Lepas gua frust tengok kedai kueh tiaw Uncle Bakti tutup (latest... Aiie cakap Uncle dah tak berniaga kat situ), gua pon bawak anak bini pi jenjalan round Penang.

And then, wa masuk George Town ikut jalan tepi penjara, Stadium Penang, Jalan tikiuh and tembus kat Caravan Cafe nasi kandar.. malang sekali Caravan Cafe dah tutup larr... I dunno why - maybe i came on a wrong day (cannot be, it's saturday..!!) or the restaurant is going through renovation)....

Anyway, round punyer round.... kitorang singgah kat sini.... anak lak tgh dok tido lam kete.

"Camne huh? Anak tido nih?", Upiq tanya bini.

"Hmmm... Payah larrr. Takkan nak tinggal Faiq lam kete kot?", Yong menjawab dalam kerisauan.

"Jap. Nanti i carik parking yg lebih dekat pastuh kita turun, minum cepat2 and masuk balik kete. Kita ushar larrr kete dari gerai tuh. Kot2 ader orang nak pecah tingkap kete ker kacau Faiq ker, ek?" Upiq cuba meyakinkan bini.

"Okay. Takleh lelamer arr. Bawak kamera ker?", bini pon ter'makan' pujukan gua.

haha.... "Yes..!!!", dalam hati gua.

Gua pon dropped bini kat gerai, soh dia pi order dulu.

Gua pon pusing lagi seround dan jumpa parking yang tak brape dekat dan tak brape jauh gerai tuh.

Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan 1

The previous photos were taken during my trip to Penang last weekend with wifey and son to sent our problematic maid to her new employer. My maid is so troublesome that today i received a news that - the new employer had decided to sent her home, Indonesia after working there for only seven days..!!! (i had her for six pain-in-the a*** weeks before finally we decided sending her away...).

The new employer lives in Bukit Gedung and i sent the maid directly to the new employer's house without having to go round-and-round beating the bushes and not even having to call her asking for direction. Hahah... Sap Sap Soey.... She was surprised on how i managed to find her house easily when even her in-laws would have missed her house after umpteen times of visits. So was my wifey, impressed in disbelief how quick we found the place.

Believe it or not, her house is just behind our favourite makan place and the jamming studio was just opposite her house. Hahaha.... termaesek jah...(say it with a kelantan slang). Anyway, enough whining about the maid thingy.

I can share with you more stories personally if you are interested in details or advices on any maid related matters.

Back to Penang story, we were there for less than 24 hours but managed to cover quite a few memorable sites. I took my wife to places we used to frequent in the past and related stories attached to each of the site.

I managed to snap some photos of the places where we used to hang around - enjoying our life in the campus and the island. For the benefit of our spouses, partners et etc i describe a lil' bit about the places, yah?

Immediately after exiting Bukit Gedung traffic light, i saw this...!! It's located at the same row of shophouses block where Victoria Station outlet situated. If VC is on the side facing inside the housing area, then Kassim Mustafa is facing the main road. Initially, i thought that KM has moved out from George Town and relocated its restaurant here, however, after the city tour i had found that KM has expanded with branches all over Penang. I saw at least 3 of KM's outlets including the one in Chulia Street.. (one of our post midnite entertainment makan place...) i'l post its photo later.

Then, on the way to Sg Dua and Pekaka, I stopped here. At 2:00pm in the afternoon, there were already many people queueing up his mee rebus...!!! gila betul.... Wifey asked why is his mee rebus so sedap?? Well, honestly i didn't really know how to answer the question... It's just the very sedap lorrrr... haha...

I felt like ordering a plate with extra 'cucur' but my stomach was a bit full after having lunch at Bukit Gedung. Missed it but i will definitely come again on my next unscheduled trip to Penang.

Then, i took my family round USM and i must say that there's so much development now. However, some places stay the same like this stadium olahraga where we had our occasinally evening runs, fitness test, inter-desa footie and kejohanan olahraga USM where i had been to the finals of the tug-of-war competition 3 times and yielded 3 golds... haha... and I was never the anchor man in Hilton's team (imagine how big the other guys were).

What i like most here was the free flow Milo drinks served to the athletes by the ever present Milo van whenever this kind of event was held in the campus. Hey, I watched Watson Nyambek ran here too...!!!

This is how the hockey turf looks like now. Sad. Personally, it's not the best turf material around and this kind of pitch can be bumpy and the synthetic surface can be a bit hard and rough. If you wanna play on it, be prepared to get wounded whenever to fell on the pitch. I played my inter-desa hockey here for Permai with Atul Kumar wooohhhh..... He was like Cantona to MU who can score and create something out of nothing (lebey kurang arrr)....

In those days, the pitch boasted one of the best turf surface in the country when it hosted the prestigious Sultan Azlan Cup. Hey, Aiie and me saw the lagendary Mirnawan Nawawi and Sarjit Singh played on the same turf....

This was where we spent our fun time the most and in a healthy way too...!! We toiled and sweated out almost every evening culminating with get together of roller blading just before night comes and then lepak at the cafes for drinks.

Personally, i have the fondest attachment to these courts and it was here that i had developed my tennis skills and more importantly, i grew up into a man.

My character foundation was built in RMC but they were strenghten enormously at these humble and unassuming courts. This was where i had a glimpse of what real life was to be such as learning the meaning of word 'pressure' and how to handle it, to train tirelessly and get results as an individual or as a team, to develop and test physical and mental toughness, to be 0-40 down and make a comeback from behind, to develop my leadership and organisation skills, develop my social and responsibility skills, to play hard and work hard, to loose an important tie and learn from the defeat, to improve on my weaknesses and strive for perfection, dare to challenge and be challenged and most perennial it taught me to be a WINNER.

These are the kind of education which i can never learn in the many classrooms and tutorials. I guess these are the lil' big things that makes my uni life not only so good but great and fantastic. A wholesome education, i would say.

Thus, apart from my lecturers, I would like to thank many people whom i had the opportunity to work or learn through these experiences like Pak Ya, Cikgu Razak, Seok Har, Dr Rosihan, the court guardians (shit, wa lupa nama dorang siot), Pak Rahim (rocky's faher), Francis, PW clan and a host of people associated to it.

Anyway, the tennis courts in the photo are not the original courts which we had grinded and made to grind in the past because the original site was demolish to make way for the development of the current library. Well, at least we know that 'our' home courts demise had been made for a good cause and will contribute for the benefit of knowledge cultivation among the younger generations. Rest in peace...

Stay tuned as i had more delicious photos to come.

Hockey nite...

That's the photo of my hockey stick, a thoughful present from wifey on m 1st birthday as her husband. I've got three hockey sticks a TK, Vijayanti and Malik but this one is the only non-wooden in my collections. The Vijayanti and Malik are in quite bad condition thus, i had been using this TK hockey stick for quite awhile already.
Like many other modern hockey sticks, it's made of composite instead of wood like in those days. I remembered using my wooden Grays hockey stick while playing hockey in USM with the likes of Atul Kumar, Eric Lee, Vijayaraj etc and in one of the inter-desa tourney, i got scolded by Atul in front of many students who came to support us (yeah, you were one of them, aiie... betcha laughing your a** off now). I like the wooden rather than the composite hockey stick but you can hardly find any of it nowadays unless you are willing to fork out a fortune for a good one or you have to go to Pakistan to get a cheap one. Either/or the total cost would be expensive for a social hockey player like me.
Anyway, I wonder how did wifey knew how to buy a hockey stick when she's not into the sport all. Thanks beb, for being such an understanding partner and for being supportive of my sporting activities. Lurv u...

Every Friday nite or as often as possible, i get the chance to play hockey with my old school mates. We have played at almost all the hockey stadiums in KL such as Stadium Tun Razak, Pantai Stadium (KLHA), Kementerian Pendidikan stadium (in Pantai too..) and Bukit Jalil. In the last few months we've been playing mostly at Bukit Jalil pitch 2 (not the main arena) because normally people like us who plays kampong-style hockey are not allowed to use the main arena. However, last friday there was a surprise when the booking officer upgraded us to the main pitch (its because the national team were in India playing Asia Cup tourney). Whoaaaa....

I have been to the main arena for many many times already, as an avid fan and supporter of Malaysia hockey scene right from Commonwealth Games to Word Cup to Six-Nations Challenge to Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and even the local leagues and other internationl friendlies but having said that, i have never played on it before.

However, seeing the pitch from far and playing on it are two different things altogether. It is definitely the best hockey pitch i've ever played on and just by hitting and trapping the balls, the thudding sound will send shivers to your spine. This stadium is equivalent to the Bernabeu or Old Trafford or Delle Alpi in football and i could just stand quietly admiring the aura that surrounds the neat green turf and appreciate its history.

We played a good two hours of kampung-style hockey and went back satisfied drenched in sweat. We then lepak at mamak for a drink before heading home.

To all of you who'd like to play hockey or to get a decent amount of exercise (oh well yes, you will sweat....), please come down to our hockey session at your own will irregardless of your hockey skills or past expereinces. Believe me that a lot of us are out of shape and many others who are playing with us have never touched a hockey stick before. so, Padil, ada berani? rumah lu seberang jalan jerrr...

Ciao....
